Lodi, California, a city originally known as Mokelumne, was founded in August 1869 with the establishment of a Central Pacific Railroad station. Its name was changed to Lodi in 1874, with various theories attributing the new name to a local racehorse, the famous bridge in Italy, or citizens from Lodi, Illinois.
