Baby Photography Props: What We Use (And What You Don’t Need to Bring)
You don’t need to bring a single prop to your session at Tiny Dreamers Studio – everything is here, professionally chosen, and ready for your baby. I’ve been photographing newborns and babies in my Auburn, California studio for over 15 years, and in that time I’ve built a prop collection that fills an entire room: wraps, bowls, baskets, headbands, bonnets, backdrop systems, and custom-built furniture pieces. What goes into those dreamy images isn’t just the props themselves – it’s the thought behind every single selection before your little one even arrives.
Here’s a proper look at what’s actually in my studio, what we use and why, and the one exception to “bring nothing” that makes for some of my most emotional images.
Why Do Baby Photography Props Make Such a Big Difference?
Baby photography props aren’t just decoration – they create scale, warmth, and context. They make a tiny newborn look even more precious, and they help tell the story of this specific moment in your family’s life. A hand-knitted bonnet from my collection reads completely differently to a polyester hat from a big-box store. A deep, hand-stained wooden bowl makes a newborn look like they belong in a fairy tale. These details are what give my images that timeless, dreamy quality that families come back to me for, session after session.
For milestone sessions – the 3-month, 6-month, and sitter stages – props shift focus. We’re telling a different story at each stage. A newborn is curled up and still; a sitter is bright-eyed and full of personality. The props I choose reflect that shift, from delicate wraps and tiny hats for newborns to soft textures and playful backdrops for older babies discovering the world around them.

What Props Does Tiny Dreamers Studio Actually Use?
Parents are often genuinely surprised when they first see my prop room. Here’s a look at the categories I work with most often.
What Kinds of Wraps and Fabrics Do You Use for Newborn Sessions?
Stretchy jersey wraps are the foundation of every newborn session. I have them in dozens of shades – from the softest creams and blush tones to deeper earth colours and warm neutrals. Fabric quality matters more than most people realize. Too stiff, and the wrap looks forced. Too thin, and you lose the beautiful drape that makes these images so iconic. I’ve specifically invested in high-quality wraps because they hold their shape and photograph beautifully in every light.
For baby milestone sessions with older babies, I shift to faux fur flokati rugs and chunky knit layers that add warmth and texture without overwhelming the little personality that’s starting to shine through. The goal is always for the fabric to support the image, not dominate it.
Are Wooden Bowl and Basket Poses Safe for Newborns?
Yes – when done correctly. This is something I want to be completely clear about, because safety is never a secondary consideration at Tiny Dreamers Studio. The bowl and basket poses you see in my gallery – where a baby appears to be nestled inside a prop – are composite images. I photograph your baby safely on my padded posing beanbag first, then composite the prop in post-production. Your baby is never placed unsupported inside a container.
My posing beanbag is the centrepiece of every newborn session: oversized, cushioned, covered in layers of soft fabric, and positioned to keep your baby completely comfortable throughout. Every wooden bowl and basket in my collection is full-sized, hand-selected, and structurally sound. After more than 15 years and hundreds of sessions, safety comes before everything else – always.

What Headbands, Bonnets, and Hair Accessories Are Available for Baby Sessions?
This is usually the section that gets the most delighted reactions from moms during their session. I have a curated wardrobe of handmade headbands, lace bonnets, and floral crowns sized specifically for newborns and small babies. Many of my pieces are made by local artisans or sourced from small independent makers – you genuinely won’t find these on Amazon.
For sitters and older babies, I have darling bow ties, headwraps, and fabric clips in seasonal colours. When a family comes in with a colour palette in mind, I almost always have something that fits. Tiny Dreamers Studio maintains a full wardrobe specifically so parents never have to shop.
How Does the Studio Choose Backdrops and Custom Sets?
Every session at Tiny Dreamers Studio is built around a custom-designed set. I don’t use generic white or grey backdrops – each set is assembled using custom-painted muslin backdrops, layered fabric textures, and hand-selected colour palettes that I discuss with you in advance. I build every backdrop selection around your nursery colours, your aesthetic preferences, and the season. Summer sessions have a different energy to winter ones, and I love reflecting that in the images. You can even browse my backdrop options before your session as part of the planning process.

Should I Bring Anything to My Baby Photography Session?
The short answer is no – Tiny Dreamers Studio is a full-service experience. You don’t need to stop at a craft store, search Etsy, or worry whether your prop choices are “good enough.” Everything is here. That said, there are a few personal touches I love to incorporate when families have them:
- A meaningful heirloom – a grandmother’s crocheted blanket, a tiny pair of shoes from your own childhood, or a handmade item from a loved one. These make for some of my most emotional images, and families talk about them for years.
- A sibling’s favourite stuffed animal – if an older child is joining the session, bringing one of their toys for the baby portrait creates a beautiful connection between them.
- A book or special keepsake – I’ve photographed babies with first editions of classic children’s books, hand-stitched quilts, and family Bibles. When the item is meaningful, it comes through in the image.
What I’d gently steer you away from: buying brand-new props specifically for the session. Freshly purchased items rarely photograph as beautifully as well-made studio pieces – they tend to have harsh labels, awkward sizing, or bright colours that clash with the overall palette we’ve designed. Trust what’s already here. It’s all been chosen with exactly your baby’s session in mind.
