How long is a cake smash session and what is included?

Our cake smash sessions are actually a full baby portrait session with the last set being a cake smash. These sessions are typically 1–2 hours in length plus viewing your session images. We typically start with optional family and sibling photos on one of our solid backdrops. Next we do 2 classic portrait sets utilising our baby closet or your own clothing. Last will be the smash and splash cake smash and an optional bubble bath in the tiny tub.

How many images do I get with my cake smash session?

This is up to you! I show you the images taken and YOU get to choose your favourite images and decide which ones you would like to keep after your session takes place.

How does the cake smash session planning work?

When it comes to your baby, leave everything up to me! I will send a planning questionnaire that asks questions about colours, styling, backdrops, outfits and any special requests you may have. All my sessions are designed with the family's requests in mind.

What if my baby cries during the cake smash session?

To be honest it happens here and there, but I purposefully plan shoots around your baby's schedule so they arrive recently napped and fed and usually very happy! For babies with stranger anxiety we allow time for them to explore the studio and warm up to me. I also send a detailed prep guide so your baby is prepared for the cake. I have photographed hundreds of cake smashes and have a great system in place to get the best outcome we can from the photo shoot.

Cake smash sessions are typically scheduled around baby’s first birthday, most often at 11 months if you’d like your images ready in time for their celebration. At this stage, babies are usually sitting confidently, full of curiosity, and love exploring (and smashing!) their cake.

If your timing looks a little different, that’s completely okay — I work with babies at all stages and tailor each session to match your little one’s personality and comfort level.

Every session includes a set number of high-resolution digital images of your choice, with the option to purchase additional favorites after viewing your gallery. From the set design to the cake and styling, everything is taken care of for you — so you can simply show up and enjoy the experience.

Each session is thoughtfully styled to match your vision, whether you love something simple and timeless or fun and playful. Sessions are baby-led and relaxed, allowing your little one to explore, react, and have fun at their own pace.

All selected images are professionally retouched and ready for download within 5 days. You’ll handpick your favorites, ensuring your final collection includes only the images you truly love. You’ll also have the option to expand your gallery or choose from heirloom albums, wall art, and keepsakes — designed to be enjoyed for years to come.

Next we do 2 classic portrait sets utilizing our baby closet or your own clothing. These are usually done on solid, wood or fine art drops. Last will be the smash and splash cake smash and optional bubble bath in the tiny tub.

I also send a pretty lengthy prep guide so your baby is prepared for the cake which can many times make babies upset. I have photographed hundreds of cake smashes and have a great system in place to get the best outcome we can from the photo shoot.

You may have noticed in some of my photos babies with large spoons. Although we do prepare baby for their cake prior to the session taking place sometimes babies just don’t want to eat it. And that’s ok. That’s why I call it a cake smash and not a cake eat! I promise my experience is why you want me to photograph your baby’s smash because I know how to work with your little one instead of forcing things on them.
