About Colfax
Colfax, nestled in Placer County, California, boasts a rich history deeply rooted in the Western expansion and the Gold Rush era. Originally known as Alder Grove in 1849, it quickly evolved into Illinoistown, serving as a vital supply hub for numerous gold mining camps. The area was also home to the Nisenan indigenous people for thousands of years prior to the arrival of European settlers. This early period saw significant events, including the first recorded stagecoach robbery in the gold country near Illinoistown in 1852. The city’s development was profoundly shaped by the Central Pacific Railroad.
